Photo of the Week: Saris Drying in the Indian Sun

Omkareshwar, India

On a morning boat ride around the Indian island of Omkareshwar, we watched the women laying out their freshly washed saris, placing them carefully on the steps leading down to the water’s edge.

wait…so they wrap their bodies with just one piece of clothing? I thought their saris were at least two-piece outfits. Wow!

Yep – a piece of sari fabric is actually about 6 metres long and it wraps around the body three or four times! Then there’s two more pieces of the same material stitched into an underskirt and into a blouse which the woman wears underneath.
